Downtown Districts Join the Team to Support Coaches vs. Cancer

On Saturday, February 6th, four local business organizations will join forces with Bruce Weber in the first ever “Downtown Throwdown” in support of the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising drive.

Also on that date, ESPN’s College GameDay coverage will originate from our area as they follow our community throughout the day in anticipation of their national broadcast of the Fighting Illini’s 8 p.m. game against Michigan State at the Assembly Hall.

The Campustown Business Group, the Downtown Champaign Association, the Urbana Business Association and the Krannert Center District are encouraging their members to donate a percentage of their sales on Saturday, February 6th to the cause.

Head Coach Bruce Weber said, “February 6 will be a special day for our community, with ESPN GameDay Driven by State Farm in town to broadcast live from the Assembly Hall that morning and televise our game against Michigan State at night.” Weber added, “The Champaign-Urbana business community is heightening anticipation of the event by donating a portion of their sales from February 6 to Coaches vs. Cancer. We appreciate the support and commitment by area businesses to help in the fight against cancer.”

With the help of the News-Gazette/WDWS/WHMS, participating businesses will be promoted for the weeks leading up to the big day.

“We feel there will be tremendous excitement in the community with the Illini playing the Spartans on Saturday evening. This fundraiser provides an opportunity for the business community to support Coaches vs. Cancer as well as the many visitors to our community for the day. We all know someone who is struggling, who has struggled or who has lost the battle to cancer. This event provides all of us an opportunity to support the American Cancer Society and its fundraising efforts,” stated Jill Guth, JSM Development and chair of the Campustown Business Group.

Susan Toalson, President of the Urbana Business Association, added the event is “a fun way to partner with Coaches vs Cancer by simply eating, drinking, and shopping in the heart of our community!”

If a business is interested in participating in the event, please contact Jill Guth, Susan Toalson, or Casey Loving.
